RIDA Growth - Coaching & Mentoring
According to The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) UK Training and Development Survey, the use of coaching and mentoring in organisations is now widepread. Almost four-fifths of respondents now use coaching in their organisation (79%). Use of coaching as a development tool has seen rapid growth in recent years – in fact 77% of respondents reported that their organisation’s use of coaching has increased in the last few years.
Coaching is now part of the new performance-led culture of employment rather than the traditional employment model of job security. It is a process solution that suits our needs and times.
It is a proven and effective mechanism for enabling an organisation to meet competitive pressures, plan for succession and bring about change.
But what are the difference between Mentoring and Coaching?
Mentoring |
Coaching |
Ongoing relationship – often lasts for a long period of time |
Relationship generally has a set duration |
Can be more informal, with meetings taking place as and when the mentee needs some advice, guidance or support |
Structured in nature and meetings are scheduled on a regular basis |
More long-term and takes a broader view of the person/ business |
Short-term (sometimes time-bounded) and focused on specific development areas/issues |
Mentor is usually more experienced and qualified than the ‘mentee’. Typicall someone who can pass on knowledge, experience and open doors to otherwise out-of-reach opportunities |
Coaching is generally not performed on the basis that the coach needs to have direct experience of their client’s formal occupational role, unless the coaching is specific and skills-focused |
Agenda is set by the mentee, with the mentor providing support and guidance to prepare them for future roles |
The agenda is focused on achieving specific, immediate goals |
Mentoring resolves more around developing the mentee professional |
Coaching revolves more around specific development areas/issues |
What is RIDA Business coaching and mentoring?
Business coaching is facilitative one-to-one coaching with business owners, Directors and Managers. and owners. The programme is focused on the success of the business and is likely to include a mixture of short and long-term objectives.
It is very lonely at the top. Especially for an owner-manager of an SME and even running a large corporate business can be lonely. Issues such as your own growth and development, working relationships with your management team or specific business challenges can be highly confidential meaning discussion with colleagues is impossible.
A RIDA business mentor/coach is free to question and address specific issues, which enables the Owner/ Director the rare opportunity to discuss them, think out loud and receive constructive feedback.
Coaching and Mentoring is not just for business owners though – many teams and individuals have benefited from the support, delivering greater productivity to the owner in turn.
